This week we go BIG and to California for some Sturgeon fishing in Northern California. These Sturgeon fish are the largest freshwater species in the United States.

Greg said he once had a 300 pounder on his line that almost spooled him. Thank goodness there was an angler on his boat near by and let Greg get on board and the boat ended following the sturgeon up stream a few miles while Greg landed him. After landing that beast he said. “I am whooped!” Greg was done for the day after fighting to keep him on the line.

Texas Land Cut

I had the pleasure of going to the Land Cut with a few of my friends from church and we had a great time! The video provided shows a few of our catches of black drum in this area of the Texas Coastal Bend.

Land Cut

Last week we enjoyed a great day of fishing in the Land Cut of Texas. This is a popular place to fish for many anglers on the Texas Coastal Bend. This particular day we caught several speckled trout and a black drum. Pictures are available on our Fishing Tales blog post.

Texas Game Warden Watch with Chuck Ford

With the weather improving and spring around the corner the Game Wardens are out checking boat safety compliance and trout limits. Some areas the trout limits are different and you need to know these regulations. Coast Guard is also out checking boats and be sure to have flares on board your vessels.

Also, the black drum are running and some great catches are being made around the Packery Channel, Clems Marina, Causeway Pier, Red Dot Pier, and Marker 37.

Texas Game Warden Watch with Chuck Ford

Sea-grass is an important part of our estuary and is protected in certain parts of our shoreline. Be aware of places your boating and the shallow areas with sea-grass. If you travel through the sea-grass its a violation if you up root this plant.

There was some early concerns about the Speckled Trout populations along our coastlines and public meetings where several attended to give and receive feedback. At this time the Texas Parks & Wildlife will maintain the current speckled trout limits of 10 per day and one per day over 25 inches.

Captain Chad Ferguson

Chad Ferguson shares his insights and techniques at Eagle Mountain Lake, Texas. Chad uses 2 key methods while fishing; rod and reel is primarily his focus when going out on the water, but also uses a jug lines to balance out the day. Kids really like the Jug Fishing as Chad gets them started for the day. Blue catfish are typically your larger species to target, especially in the winter times. These are the 40+ pounders anglers love to pull in for a nice picture and release. Channel Catfish are Chad’s favorite to target because they’re the best eating and smaller size for the choice fillet. Flathead catfish can get very large as well, but typically smaller then the Blue cat. www.learntocatchcatfish.com

Chad usually uses live shad 90% of the time and cut bait for the others. Catfish are definately preditors and will be agressive with live bait.

Gary Turner from Athens Georgia and fishes South Carolina enjoys catching catchfish with his pontoon boat rigged up with 8 to 15 rods on each fishing trip. He Say’s it’s not like bass fishing when you’re working a single rod & reel, catfishin you’re setting up several rods with live bait and cut bait and waiting for a strike. Michael “Pork Chop” Crosby

Michael Crosby’s catfish fishing trip on the James River Virginia produces some Monster Blue Catfish! Michael known in his circle of friends as “Pork Chop” pulled in this nice 58 lb blue. Sweet!!! He also sent us a nice picture of his 70 lb Blue Cat caught on the last day!!! www.olddominioncatfishclub.org   

Michael “Pork Chop” Crosby on his last day pulled in this nice 70 lb blue catfish… WOW. Using dead gizzard shad for bait was able to catch some nice monsters at the James River in Virginia. At the end of each day they would net their bait for the next days fishin.

Texas fishing has gotten a little chili this time of year. The wind chill alone can freeze off your nose or ear while cruising 50 mph on open air boat to your favorite fishing spot. We decided to begin the new year by going up North to learn more about Ice Fishing and the cold weather to appreciate what we have here in Texas. This week we are thrilled to have 3 Ice Fishermen to share there Ice Fishing experiences. Also in this episode we review the new Okuma Serrano Baitcaster reel.

Mark Breitenfeldt from Saint Paul Minnesota shares his story about taking his Chevy for a swim while going Ice Fishing. One evening Mark decided to go out on an ice fishing trip and the fog had set in making it difficult to see. He was following a cars fresh tracks that were previously made and thought he was safe. He didn’t realize that he was headed for a natural spring in the lake and his chevy pickup truck suddenly went for a dive. The car’s tracks he was following had also sunk.

Nathan Krusko from New York talks about tournament Ice Fishing and hosts a podcast show called “North East Ice Fishing“. Anyone can get started with ice fishing with about $100 investement. Just pickup a few tackle items and a hand crank auger and your ready to go. Tournament Ice fishing is really catching on and gaining in popularity. Purch and Blue Gill are the main targets in this type of fishing.

Northeast ice fishing tournaments is the heaviest stringer up to 10 with some other variations depending on tournament. While pre-fishing for a tournament Nathan was able to pull in over 200 fish and releasing. It can be a real fast action sport if your able to get on the crib.

You can tune into Nathan & Chris Jones at North East Ice Fishing Podcast. Also available at iTunes.  Nathan’s been fishing ice fishing since he was a kid being taught by his dad the tricks of the trade.

Captain John Gribble from Port Clinton Ohio talks about Ice Fishing for walleye on the famous Lake Erie. Ice can get up to 2 feet thick in the deep cold winter. Captain John uses an air boat or atv’s depending on the condition of the ice to navigate his way to his favorite fishing spots.

Texas Game Warden Watch with Chuck Ford

Speckled trout are in the deeper waters with the cooler temperatures and redfish can still be found in the flats. Just wait till after the cold front and you’ll find them schooled up tailing. Talking with a air boat guide said he runs over thousands of them all the time.

Flounder can only be caught by rod & reel with a limit of 2 during the month of November. November is also a black-out month for flounder gigging. With this new regulation we are seeing their numbers increase for flounder this year.

In Matagorda Hollis focusses on the sandy grassy flats while wade fishing in about 3 feet of water. “Fall winter and springtime we focus on the big hogs (Trout), that the beauty of Matagorda bay right there!” I asked Hollis if he ever had his boat drift away from him while wade fishing? “I left my anchor untied one time and while wade fishing I looked back and see my boat gone. Terry Loomis Caught a Nice 38 inch, 18 lbs Bull redfish at the Port A Jetty on piggy perch. He was visiting from San Antonio TX.

 John Coggins of Corpus Christi Texas caught this nice slot redfish at the Port A Jetty. Measuring at about 26 inches this red will be on the dinner table that night.

Art catches a nice spanish mackerel at the Port A Jetty. He is also sporting a nice home made packpack that helps him carry his gear over the bolders of the jetty.

Long Island Sound
1st week of October Patti & I went to Bronx New York to visit kids and grand kids. During our stay we enjoyed a week of outdoors which included camping and hiking the Catskills mountains, world class zoo, picking apples at an apple orchard and a day of fishin on the Long Island Sound. Captain Rich Tenreiro guided 3 fourth year med students (including my son in law) of Einstein University and myself on a fantastic day of blackfish fishing the Long Island Sound.

These blackfish are bottom fish creatures that can be very illusive and difficult to catch. They like to hang around structures and reefs and when hooked will try and take your line into the rocks to break off. Capt Rich and first mate Natalie Roseberry worked very hard to put us on the meat. Winds and tidel currents were strong in the morning and made it difficult to anchor in very specific locations in the LI Sound.  Using a 2 anchor technique they were able to hold the boat in such away to maximize our ablilities to hook some nice blackfish for the dinner table that night. www.rgfishing.com

Captain Rich also hosts a TV Show the Northeast Angler where he gives great angling tips for fishing the Northeast. We had a great time with Captain Rich and appreciate his time and efforts in making a memorable experience for us all!

Texas Game Warden Watch with Chuck Ford

This week is on boat safety. If you get stopped by a Game Warden you should have the following items on board your vessel:

1. GW will check your boat registration from the number on side of boat.

2. You have to have in your possession your Certificate of Number card.

3. Should have a life jacket available for every person on board. Any youth under the age of 13 should be wearing a life jacket at all time while on the vessel.

4. Should have a fire extinguisher  available

5. Throw-able flotation cushion

6. Horn or whistle

7. Your catches of the day they will check size & bag limits

8. They will also look for any possible intoxication of the driver

This week we have some great guests that will take us on a journey to catch some nice redfish. The fall season has begun and that means the Bull reds have started their run along the Texas Coastal Bend. I stopped by the Packery Channel Jetty & Port A Jetty and found some nice redfish catches that we hope you enjoy at JustGoFishin Tales.

Cookie Vela catches a 44 inch bull redfish at the Port A Jetty. We were able to catch it on video and create this short clip. We hope you enjoy….

These beauty’s are sought after by all sport anglers for there size and fight they give. Oversized Reds are catch and release while limits are placed on catches in the slot. You’ll need to check your local State regulations.

Slobberknockers is what David calls these mammoth bull redfish. They hit so hard slobber comes out of there mouth. Winter Springs Florida at the Mosquito Lagoon is David favorite place to fish these days. www.aaahawgwildcharters.com

The Mosquito Lagoon is a closed estuary and has only one access point to bay. 90% of the fish are residents and don’t migrate outside of the bay. There are about 11 schools of monster redfish that Captain Rogers tracks and has lots of success with his clients.

The State Record for a Redfish is 59 1/2 inches long and 54 1/2 lbs by Artie Longron on January 30, 2000.

It’s important to know that if you catch an oversized redfish and decide to keep it, you must tag it immediately. This tagged redfish will not be counted as part of your daily bag of three in the slot.

If you think that you have a record fish, here is the process it takes to be recognized:

1. Obtain an Angler Recognition Award Application
2. Take fish to an official Scaler for fish to be weighed & measured.
3. Take fish to a Certified Biologist to identify species.
4. Compete the entire form and mail to Austin for recognition.

Our first guest is Vincent Rinando of Houston Texas. Kayak fishing in the Galveston area is great to venture off where others that are land locked can’t go. Fishing the shallows and drop-offs you can usually find redfish anytime of day. First couple of years I sort of paddled, then I learned paddling… Let me explain, “It’s like the difference between Wrastling and Wrestling everybody sort of wrastles around but it’s really not wrestling. The first couple of years we did a lot of paddlin but it wasn’t really paddling. I went to American Canoe Association and became an instructor for paddling.”

The Bull Reds are beginning to run along the coast. Catches are being made at the Port A Jetty and Packery Channel Jetty and other known locations.

This redfish run has started early and producing  several big fish. Expected to last through October and first part of November.

5 things to be prepared with while kayak fishing:

1. From sunset to sunrise you have to display a 360 degree white light that’s visible for at least 2 miles.
2. Any type of motor including trolling motors mounted on a kayak has to be registered with the Texas Parks and Wildlife.
3. Any type of sail placed on a kayak requires registration with the Texas Parks and Wildlife.
4. You have to have a personal flotation device (life jacket) on board your kayak.  Under 13 years old must wear life jacket at all times while on boat.
5. You have to have a horn or whistle on board in case you get in trouble.

This week we learn more about the awesome Goliath Grouper in the Gulf of Mexico. Still protected from any harvesting to allow the species to repopulate in the region… these huge fish are a great catch and release sport for an experience of a lifetime.

Our 1st guest is Captain Tom McLaughlin from Cape Haze Florida say’s on catching a Goliath grouper, “I tell people it’s like taking the heaviest tackle you’ve ever seen and attaching it to the bumper of a large pickup truck… it’s a 5 min tug of war and many people have a tough time making it.” www.anotherkeeper.com

Todays episode of JGF looks and sounds like some great offshore adventures in catching and releasing Goliath grouper. Goliath are also found in the Texas coastal waters for a great recreational sport fishing day. Checkout our JustGoFishin Offshore Directory.

Texas State Record for Goliath Grouper is 551 lbs and caught by Gus Pangarakis on June 29th 1937. This record has certainly held on for a long time and likely to continue with the federal protection currently in place on these Goliath.

This prehistoric like fish is found in the Gulf coast states (Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas).  Angling for this unique freshwater predator has become more popular in the sport fishing industry.

Captain Bubba Bedre talks about what it’s like catching one of these Gargantuan Gars of the river. He say’s, “there’s two kinds of Alligator Gar, Lazy or Active. This gargantuan alligator gar is definitely one to put on your angling list of fish to go after. Looks and sounds like it would be a real kick in the pants to hook on to one of these monsters.

Texas giant stingrays are plentiful along the Texas Coastal Bend and Captain John Little shows us how to catch one. Also, today we share the dangers that go along with wade fishing and what can happen if you encounter a stingray. A couple anglers share their stories on getting barbed by one of these nemesis creatures that lurk on the bottom.

It took Hal six weeks to recover from his stingray barb. The pain was so excruciating while he traveled to the hospital that he wanted to marry  the nurse after she made the pain go away. The next day he stayed in the boat for some drift fishing.

Troy while fishing the shoreline took what he thought precautions in getting barbed by a stingray. Wearing boots that he thought would provide him protection and turns out to be a run to the emergency room.

Troy still wade fishes on Team OSO for trout and redfish or whatever he can catch but is more aware of the pain associated with stingrays.

Captain John Little with his family went out fishing for shark and ended up with a trophy sized Texas Giant Stingray. This stingray took about an 1:45 minutes to land on the boat at Port O’ Conner Jetty area.

He thought it might be a State record but the Texas Parks and Wildlife doesn’t keep track of catch & release stingray.

Catfishing the Guadalupe River with Larry Little.  Some nice Blue Cats and Flatheads can be caught on the river using limb lines. Saltwater fishing license is all that’s required to fish this area because of the proximity to the saltwater. Larry Little is the father of Captain John Little that fishes the coastal bay areas of Texas.

Little Fishing Tips with Captain John Little
This weeks fishin tip is how to take care of your fishing poles and prevent scoring. Whenever you travell with your fishing poles be sure to take off your weights so that they don’t swing around your poles and score them. I’ve seen lots of poles broken from not taking weights off. Also, when your securing your hook on the eye of the rod, be sure to use the medal part of the eye and avoid the plastic parts. this will help keep your poles in great working order. Fishing reports from Port A look real good offshore this past week with catches of Ling, King fish, Wahoo, Amberjack and shark.

The PINS area are catching Trout and Redfish on a low tide. Shark are also being caught with some large Amberjack.

Most of the shark caught are black tips with a few hammerheads and bonnetheads. Keep safe out there.

Little Fishing Tips with Captain John Little
This weeks tip is keeping your hands out of the bait live wells. Hands can have sun block on them and/or whatever you ate for breakfast. This can actually kill your bait.

Best to use water from the marina’s bait tanks when getting started. Right now you can get Croaker, Piggy Perch, Mullet and shrimp. Mullet will be very hearty and last longer.

This weeks tip is polarized sun glasses. When you fish be sure to get polarized sun glasses which will allow you to see the grass lines and sand pockets. They’ll take the glare of the water surface and allow you to see into the water. Schools of redfish are very difficult to see with-out polarized sun glasses. New JGF Tales & Reports Studio

We are excited for our second season of JGF Tales & Reports Podcast. During the last few month’s we’ve been upgrading our equipment and moved our studio to bring to you more great fishin Tales & Reports.

Thanks to Cliff Ravenscraft of the Podcast Answerman and his consulting services we’ve added a JK Audio Broadcast Host and Compressor Limitor Gate which makes it possible to bring in telephone calls and cutout all the low frequency static in the background. The phone calls we take are “the best they can be” based on the device (Phone Line) they are using. In any rate, we are now able to expand our reach in talking with people all over the country. Soon we’ll have Skype feed into our studio which will again improve our capabilities within our studio.

Tragic Accident near Goose Island

Very unfortunate boating accident happened last Saturday the 17 of July. I asked Lee Tallas of the Corpus Christi Law Enforcement Fishing Tournament to share some thoughts on boat safety.

My wife and I were up at Goose Island when a couple of helo’s landed to airlift a man & woman to the hospital. The man lost his arm while the woman had several cuts on leg. Fortunately they both will be ok after tremendous help from others and professionals.

Studies show that approx. 15-17% of fish raised in the hatchery survive to adulthood in the local Texas Bays.  The Marine Development Center’s research team have been able to determine a more true value of the impact our local hatcheries provide by using genetics.

These paddle wheels above are used to prevent a pond from crashing by aerating, donated by SEA.  CCA and SEA and others have contributed to improving this facility over the years and have been greatly appreciated in continuing and improving conservation of our local fisheries.

Coming the 18th and 19 of June is the TGWA Fishing Tournament. We hope y’all will come out to support the Game Wardens and enjoy a day of fishing at the Roberts Point Park in Port Aransas.

This week we profile a long time Texas fisherman Dave Wyble here in Swinney Switch on the Nueces River.  Dave has been fishing this area for years with a lot of success catching several Monster Catfish. Some of these cathfish are so big he couldn’t get into the boat, he had to drag them to shore. The photo above shows his backyard where he enjoys fishing almost daily.

While I was visiting Dave at his ranch he shared with me some of his catches the last few years. He catches so many that he doesn’t take very many pictures these days but he’s got some good stories.

We hope you enjoy some of his pictures he shared with us to publish here at justgofishin.net. Dave says that catfish really go for Zote Soap. That’s primarily all he uses. He likes to use the Trot-line rig, Limb-Lines and Jug-Lines for going after Catfish, Monsters of the Nueces River.

9 Years the SEA San Antonio chapter has been providing fishing tournaments twice a year. This is their 2010  spring tournament with possibly combining both San Antonio & Corpus Christi chapters next year for the 2011 fishing tournament.

This year started off with a fish fry Friday night in Rockport for a meet & greet mixer. SEA-SA President, Chuck Kirchhof, fry’s up some Blacken Sand Trout for all the anglers and guest for a great evening of this meet & greet mixer.

Captain Scott McCune stopped by the tournament and I had a chance to visit with him about Rockport Fishing.  Captain Scott McCune offer JustGoFishin Reports for the Redfish Bay areas to Aransas Bay and spots in between.

Making Fishing Lures

Ernie Butler, Owner of Snoopy’s Pier, shares with JustGoFishin his passion for making fishing lures. This year he’s celebrating Snoopy’s 30 years in business –but he believes its been longer. I had a great time learning more about Ernie and his artificial lures he makes. Ernie invited me to jump in his truck and he took me to his home where he has all his fishing collectibles and more.

Some people may not know about his unusual pet. Yes, he has a peacock and feeds him cat food.  He said he just showed up one day and never left.

As you learn in our podcast that making a fishing lure is quite a process. Ernie over the years has refined this unique fishing lure to be very successful in catching fish.  Ernie insists that there not for sale, his currently working on a 80 piece set for his Grandson for the last 2 years, and has about 20 left to make.

Land Cut Fishing Trip

Monday after Easter Patti and I went on a fishing trip to the Land Cut. We really were not sure what to expect down there. The weather forecast said rain in the Morning with a high of 85 in the afternoon. Winds could get up to 25 mph.

Since the Land Cut has very good wind cover with land mass on both sides of this narrow passage all we really needed to do is get through the open bodies of water which is just south of the bird island area and mouth of Baffin Bay.

As we made our journey south to Land Cut the swells were about 2 feet through the tough areas but made it though just fine and we navigated to our first fishing spot and anchored up.

Baiting up our hooks with live shrimp it wasn’t long before Patti had FISH-ON! This was none stop all day. In the video taken of Patti’s black drum catch on JustGoFishin.net you can see the struggle she had with her biggest catch ever. While I was filming her bringing in her catch I had a fish-on my pole which was set in the holder. Patti’s catch was 27 inches long & 9 lbs.

After filming Patti, I grabbed my pole and still had the fish-on.  Which ended up being a nice 21 inch Speckled trout. The only trout of the day.

We both caught our limits this day of black drum and then made our journey back. The winds were heavier and the swells coming back were now about 3 feet. We ended up getting a little wet on the way back but that’s just the price you pay sometimes to get into some fish.

When we arrived home I cleaned the boat out & started to fillet the fish up. Patti went inside and made this INCREDIBLE Blacken Black Drum Dish for dinner. WOW, it was amazing. Here’s the recipe we received from Warren, my brother in-law:

Ingredients
1 Tsp. white pepper
1 Tsp. black pepper
3/4 Tsp. Dried Thyme Leaves
1/2 Tsp. Dried Oregano Leaves
1 1/4 Tbs. Paprika
2 3/4 Tsp. Salt
1 1/4 Tsp. Onion Powder
1 1/4 Tsp. Ground Cayenne Pepper
3 Sticks of Butter, melted in skillet
6 (6-10 oz) Red fish fillets, cut cut about 1/2 inch thick.
Preparation
Heat a large cast iron skillet over high heat (about 10 mins),
until you see white ash in bottom of skillet.
In a small bowl, thoroughly combine seasoning mix ingredients.
Dip each fillet in melted butter so that both sides are well coated;
then generously sprinkle seasoning mix evenly over both sides of
fillets, pressing it in by hand.
Place in hot skillet & poor 1 Tbs. melted butter over the fillet.
Cook uncovered, in hot skillet for about 2 minutes, or until the fillet looks
charred on the bottom (time will vary according to thickness of fillet).
Turn fillet over and repeat above instructions.
Continue with remaining fillets. Serve fillets while still piping hot.
To serve, place each fillet on a heated plate with a side of melted butter.

Padre Island National Seashore

PINS begins their peak season this month and offer a variety of things people do there.  I have enjoyed this area several times in camping on the beach to  enjoying the many classes and instruction they offer. On a few occasions participating in beach clean-up with some youth groups.

On a camping trip with a scout group we were able to get our admissions free to the park in exchange for cleaning the beach on our last day. They provided the bags as we walked the beach and picked up trash and on our completion, PINS awarded each one of our boys & leaders in our  group a patch which is shown. Very cool.

As I’ve discovered several things most people enjoy doing:

1. Camping
2. Wind Surfing
3. Fishing

PINS offers World Class Wind Surfing in the Bird Island area. It’s amazing the number of people that come out to wind surf this area from all over the country.

Fishing is another key pass time in the PINS area. Sporting two different types of fishing. Those that like sport fishing from their boat and launch at Bird Island to fish the bay side and those that enjoy fishing the surf. Which is along the gulf side and protected area for the Kemp’s Ridley Sea Turtles.

There has been a couple issues that have come up where the anglers who have enjoyed fishing this area that have been meet with some new stronger standards at PINS.

1. Parking availability at the Bird Island boat launch
2. New imposed speed limit on the beach during the nesting season of the Kemp’s Ridley sea turtles

As the season begins for enjoying some world class fishing in the Baffin Bay areas the Bird Island boat launch is the closest launch available to the public. There is a fee for entering the park and allows anglers to be within about 20 minutes of some great fishing.

Parking is limited to only 106 Vehicle/Trailer combination spaces. Making this very limited to busy weekends. These spaces fill up fast Saturday mornings or other busy times of year. In the past trucks and boats would would park a long side the road when parking over flowed, this isn’t available at this time because pylons have been installed to prevent this from happening as shown in picture below.  Last year there were a few vehicle’s towed.  At this time it’s best to head back up to the JFK or launch at Bluff’s Landing if Bird Island is full. The word on the street is that you have to be at Bird Island by 5:15am ish to get a parking spot.

With Kemp’s Ridley Sea Turtles nesting season underway there has been added pressure to those that like to fish the shorelines and drive down to Port Mansfield. During this nesting season the speed limit has been reduced to 15 mph for the entire stretch of beach. Some say that this limits the ability to see the park since it adds about 3 more hours to a vehicle drive time.

State Representative, Abel Herrero, has some thoughts on this current issue and urges those that have an opinion that there voices should be heard.

We also hear from an avid surf angler and president of Citizens for Access and Conservation, (CAC) Nick Meyer. He seems to bring up some valid points to this issue.

Bob Crow conducted the ceremony at Del Mar College to a full house of Benefactors & Recipients of Scholarships. Ceremony began with a mariachi band to celebrate these awards. What an uplifting evening to see the benefits of the Corpus Christi Law Enforcement Fishing Tournament last August 2009.

The Corpus Christi Law Enforcement Fishing Tournament or better known as CCLEFT has truly become a “Must” for many people to participate in because they know that it’s for higher education to those who otherwise could not afford to pursue their dreams. CCLEFT helps make this happen.

This Years 2010 Corpus Christi Law Enforcement Fishing Tournament is scheduled for August 13th & 14th. You are invited to come out and have a FUN day of fishing with your family & friends all the while supporting the community in higher education.

A Rooster of a Fish Tale

Pat Townsend shares a great story of a Rooster Fish she caught while fishing with her husband in Mexico. I had never heard of a Rooster fish so I had to look it up. It took both her and her husband to bring this one in after a long fight and 2 fishing poles. She said it was as tall as herself. We appreciate her sharing this story in our podcast. Took my grandson out fishing last fall on a quest to catch his first fish. Breyton using a mighty might fishing pole and live shrimp at the ICW was able to catch a couple small Rat Reds.

Just before Spring Break I stopped by Port A Jetty to see what kind of catches were being made. The weather was clear and warm and seemed to be a great start for the Spring Breakers. Several Sheepshead were bing caught on live shrimp with several anglers enjoying the day. Check-out their pictures.

The Drum Are Runnin

Last Saturday night we visited Clem’s Marina and Pier and within about 30 minutes 3 oversized Black drum had been caught. Visit Fishin Tales for the photos and details of these great catches. We boated by the pier Saturday afternoon and you can see that the pier is loaded with anglers.

Puerto Rico Tarpon Fishing

Tarpon fishing in Puerto Rico was quite an adventure with Captain Jeff. We caught one Tarpon that looked like about 20 lbs but were unable to pull him in the boat. As he got next to the boat he was able to flip his sharp gills around the leader and cut through.This is an in-shore fishing area where you’ll see Tarpon rolling their sides above the water everywhere.

My wife and I celebrated our 3rd wedding anniversary last week on another  honeymoon in Puerto Rico. We had a great time and even went fishing a few days.

It was a none stop week to see and do as much as we could while we were there. A few key activities we enjoyed were a kayak tour of the illuminating Bay, Old San Jaun and the Del Morro Fortress,  Arecibo Radio Telescope, Rio Camuy Caves, Snorkeling, and a couple days of fishing. We’ll have more on our fishing in Puerto Rico in a future episode.

We had a comment from a viewer that didn’t know much about podcasts and that they weren’t sure what to do. I’m sure that there are lots of people that don’t know much about podcasts including myself just a few months ago. I bought my daughters first iPod a few years ago and she’s enjoyed downloading her favorite music to her iPod and listening to them at her leisure.  In many cases we just have to ask our kids what this iPod stuff is all about. They’ll be excited you asked and share with you how they use it. iTunes is the most popular place to view and search for your favorite music and podcasts of your favorite subject. These podcasts are basically a talk show of your favorite subject that can be entertaining and/or educational. I have downloaded some of my favorite podcasts that include Grammer Girl, Dave Ramsey, Motley Fool, Podcast Answer Man, LDS CES Firesides and others. This is a great way to enjoy your favorite audio show at your leisure. iPodes have certainly become popular as well as the iPhones that provide the same access to iTunes.

Baffin Bay Rodeo

Are you ready for the Baffin Bay Rodeo! JustGoFishin caught up with Roger Viar, Director of the Baffin Bay Rodeo and shared his enthusiasm of this 2nd annual event coming this 26th, 27th and 28th of February! As I begin our First Podcast Episode, I thought it was appropriate to share with you how I caught my first fish. This might help you to learn a little more about myself and passion for fishing here in the Texas Coastal Bend and beyond.

Back in 1968 I caught my first fish at Lake Shasta in Northern California while on a family vacation. I was  8 years old and I caught this lake trout while trolling around an island. Seemed that this was the best way to keep my interest up.

The real fishing story is getting ready to go fishing.

I see weekend fisherman that spend a lot of time on the water not really adapting to the methods that professionals use to catch fish consistently. If you are a lure aficionado or tournament angler then this article is not for you, sorry! I see a lot of authors writing about how fast to work your chartreuse, pumpkin seed, gold flakey, curly tailed fish whackers or to find sandy, shelly, grassy flats drop offs, so I thought I’d write something most of you could really use to catch fish more consistently! I will go over the four or really five major types of fishing bait that we use as fishing guides.

• The first way to fish although many guides have given up this method because it requires more effort to train the customers is shrimp and popping cork (SPC).
• The Second is anchoring up and fishing the sand pockets located in the flats.
• The third is anchoring up and fishing guts and isolated deep water areas locked within the flats systems.
• The four and fifth way are fishing with Piggy’s (piggy perch not pin perch) and Croaker.

Now that I have described the types of fishing we choose, let me explain when we use them… this is the most important part! Wind, is the most important indicator of what method we will use. I personally pray for wind so we can use the most popular, successful and frequently engaged method, Shrimp and popping cork. SPC can be used for the longest time frame during the year! The SPC method also allows my customers more of a chance to do the fishing themselves instead of feeling all they do is reel in the fish! When the wind is blowing 15 knots or more this is the best option to catch fish! This is only an option in the Fall, Winter and Spring as the bait fish mature and others invade the flats system this methods becomes unfeasible, also the larger fish don’t seem to gobble up the shrimp as readily.

If you use the SPC method in the summer on the big bay the fish seem to range in the 14 inch and under category which will leave you hungry at the end of the day! If there is no wind, put the shrimp and popping cork aside, seriously, you’ve got to get used to fishing the sand pockets (Pot Holes) and put your time in doing it! This is a very important tip, don’t try to revert back to drift fishing with shrimp and popping cork. It will take time to have confidence to do this type of fishing but it is worth the effort because nothing is more effective on light wind or windless day. This type of fishing can be done with live mullet, cut mullet, dead shrimp, live shrimp, pin perch, piggy perch, ballyhoo or crabs.

I like to use live bait predominantly when there is little wind however I will almost always mix it up with cut bait too just to add scent to the water. You can use everything from a jig head to a Carolina rig with various weights; we also add water corks at times to get extra casting distance which is very important on the days without wind!

The next style of fishing is low tide fishing. Hopefully you’ve studied your map or taken note when you have been crossing the flats on normal days, if you did you will have areas in the back of your mind to try when these conditions present themselves. Be very careful if you don’t know the area well, maybe watch another boats entering that area and wait your turn to try it. Remember some lanes in the deeper guts in the flats system aren’t even as wide as your boat.

We use the anchor up method of fishing on these days too, however the big difference in choosing bait. Since a low tide day can either be windy or calm the way I determine my primary bait is based on this rule; windy days use any type of bait that will create a scent on calm days use live bait. The simple analysis is that windy days the water is murky and hard to see through and calm days the fish can actually see what they inhale from quite a distance!

Now the forth and fifth method are very similar and I will combine them; Piggy’s and Croaker. The reason I made them two different styles is because of the areas we use them. Croaker seem to stay effective way longer in the area north and south of Port Aransas such as the Laguna to the South and San Antonio Bay to the North. In the Rockport and Port Aransas areas Croaker mature faster to be used as bait than Piggy’s, but when Piggy’s start coming in look out! Piggy’s and Croaker are held very fondly by fishing guides because when you are on fish and the time is right you can’t find a hotter trout bait, not without saying Redfish will tare’em up too! We fish these types of bait at the rigs, grass edges off the deeper bay islands, reefs, Intercoastal waterway and sand pockets in the flats. The preferred rig is a size appropriate kahle hook tied to a 20# leader attached with a swivel or knot to the main line. The time of year we use this bait is from the about the middle of May into September, at that time the bait is predominantly too large and the schools start migrating.

Now that you know why and when we fish certain baits we can start talking about the various techniques that make a difference in presenting it to our prey, but that we have to save that for the next article! After all I do have to make some time to fish instead of write! With all kidding aside I want to spend time covering each of these methods in depth as they all have their place in our fishing arsenal! I hope you’ve enjoyed this article and remember if you don’t eat it release it and try to release all big Trout. Get a picture of your catch; it will last longer, save some for the kids! I stopped by the Port A Jetty and the anglers were out in full force using live and dead shrimp and taking nice catches of Sheepsheads. The weather is fabulous and the water is clear and setting up a great day of angling. I was able to visit with several anglers vacationing from different parts of the country and staying there in Port Aransas. They seemed to be enjoying the day away from the shopping malls for Christmas gifts.

After taking several pictures at Port A Jetty, I decided to run down to the Packery Channel Jetty to see what kind of angling was going on there. I found just a few fishermen and the end of the Jetty. Their only catches were hardheads, nemeses of the bottom.

What an interesting difference today between the Port A Jetty & the Packery Channel Jetty. Port A Jetty is more of a vacation destination for many from other parts of the country and therefore will have more anglers. The Packery Channel Jetty is more of a “locals” destination and with the North access road closed made things more scarce. Both jetties produce great numbers of catches but on this day the Port A Jetty had much more going for it. http://ping.fm/6prYv

CORPUS CHRISTI, TX – The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) continued its bizarre history of biased management regarding Gulf amberjack when it announced this week that the recreational season for the popular offshore species will close on October 24 due to the recreational sector overfishing its quota. This announcement comes barely two years after the Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council arbitrarily shifted a significant portion of recreational allocation to the commercial sector

“There is no way to defend what the Council has done with the management of amberjack. It borders on outright disregard for the recreational sector,” said Chester Brewer, chairman of the Coastal Conservation Associations National Government Relations Committee. “Combined with what is happening with Gulf red snapper and the commercial catch share plan for Gulf grouper, this latest announcement gives recreational anglers no reason to have any faith in the federal management of recreational fisheries.”

In 2007, the Council declared that Gulf greater amberjack were overfished, yet increased the commercial share of the fishery while reducing the recreational bag limit to one and increasing the size limit to 30 inches. The recreational restrictions were implemented despite the fact that unchecked commercial overfishing since 1990 was the primary cause of problems in the fishery – see Recreational Fishery Hijacked, CCA Press Release, September 10, 2007.

“The reduction in amberjack recreational allocation in 2007 from 84 percent to 71 percent has to be the most egregious allocation shift ever enacted by the Gulf Council,” said Ted Forsgren, executive director of CCA Florida. “Anglers were punished for supporting conservation measures and the commercial industry was rewarded for fishing over its quota. The change in catch level was a direct result of NMFS’ failure to enact adequate measures to control commercial take and failure to ever enforce the adopted allocation. We are feeling the full effects of those failures today with a closed recreational season.”

“If the Council had left the allocation where it was in 2007, and where it rightfully should have been, recreational anglers would not have been over their quota as of the end of August, and likely would not have gone over even by year’s end,” said Dr. Russell Nelson, CCA Gulf Fisheries consultant. “This is a case where an unwarranted allocation shift from recreational to commercial two years ago is shutting down our season, even though we are not the root cause of the problem.”

Adding to the frustration of anglers is the fact that last year’s recreational harvest was under the quota, but that underage is not being taken into account this year. Under the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act, catch overages and underages from previous years may be calculated in the following year’s harvest limits, but doing so is not mandatory. In the case of Gulf red snapper, however, two years of recreational overages will result in a dramatically shortened season in 2010.

“The one-sidedness of federal fisheries management is at a level that makes it almost impossible to believe recreational interests will ever be considered in any meaningful way,” said Brewer. “No fishery has ever been overfished by recreational angling alone, and any number of economic studies indicates that the recreational sector is by far the most valuable part of our marine fisheries. And yet, fishery after fishery is closing down for anglers while the Councils bend over backwards to keep the longlines and nets in the water. Robert Castaneda, President/CEO, founded Livingston Lures Inc about 6 years ago and developed the Talking Croaker. He had his “flash of genius” several years ago when he received a musical Christmas card. He ripped the card up looking for the small chip that provided the music for the card. Today, Livingston Lures has an actual chip in the Lure that makes the croaking sound when ever it’s submerged in water.

The company is named after a town in Guatemala where his grand parents reside and often go to visit them. This is where Robert enjoyed fishing with his grandfather, uncle’s and brothers.

Opok caught the smaller reds while Tony landed a nice 33″ redfish on mullet. His redfish might have had 3 to 4 more inches on him if it wasn’t for another predator that bit his tale off. Perhaps a shark or a dolphin, who knows? http://ping.fm/F4OkU

Imagine what an angler goes through to get there gear out to the end of the Jetty? You have to carry your pole(s), tackle, bait, cast net, and yes something to snack on and beverage of choice. Then if you have a successful day fishing… you have to carry your fish out!

I met Brian Ervin with his own homemade fishing backpack he had created. Obviously he had already experienced the hardship I just described above. As they say “necessity is the mother of invention”, and this is a great invention.

I’m reminded of a vacation my wife and I took earlier in the year to Costa Rica. My wife had the idea that we should pack our clothes in backpacks instead of the usual suit cases on wheels. As it turned out… this was a great idea. It was so much easier carrying our backpacks around then trying to pull our suit cases on unforgiving terrain while we transferred from cab to boat to jeep to bus to king air during our trip.

Anyway, these fishing backpacks Brian and his buddy created solves a lot of problems. He’s easily able to carry multiple fishing pulls, all his gear, cooler for drinks and snacks. If he has a good day fishing, he has a C clamp where he hangs his catches to carry them out.

Very clever Brian! This is truly the Ultimate Fishing Backpack.

These wrangling anglers called the Jetty Bandits from San Antonio, Austin, Dallas and other areas met together for a Port A Jetty Rodeo where they lassoed several Bull Redfish and Gaftops. Congratulations on a great weekend of fun for the Jetty Bandits.

The Texas Parks and Wildlife has closed flounder gigging for the month of November to allow for the population to build back up. They will be allowing 2 flounder per day by rod & real only.

Helpful tips when gigging for flounder. Best to look for them in the sandy areas and watch for the gullies where food will be consentrated. You can tell when the Tide is going out or coming in by how the flounder are positioned. When you see a flounder facing towards the shore means the tide is headed out or if the flounder is facing the bay means the tide is coming in. They’re positioning themselves to feed.

Safety tip while floundering. Keep an eye out for stingray. You can easily get stung if your not careful. If you see 2 eyes about a foot apart That means its a REALLY big stingray. http://reports.justgofishin.com
