029 JGF, Texas Two Step: Baffin Bay and Matagorda Bay

Texas Two Step: Baffin Bay and Matagorda Bay, JGF Tales and Reports Podcast Episode 029

This week we learn how to fish the legendary Baffin Bay and the magical Matagorda Bay systems along the Texas Coastal Bend. Captain Aubrey Black and Captain Hollis Forrester share there expertise in fishing these amazing waters of Texas.

Captain Aubrey Black
“The only hard structures within the bay are 2 types; first you have the rocks and second, the lower units lying next to the rocks. “When the reds start schooling up there like major lawn movers down there in the grass and get all the crabs and shrimp scooped up”. Fishing Baffin Bay the last 7 years Captain Black has been well known for the trophy trout catches as well as his clients in this unique bay. Captain Hollis Forrester
In Matagorda Hollis focusses on the sandy grassy flats while wade fishing in about 3 feet of water. “Fall winter and springtime we focus on the big hogs (Trout), that the beauty of Matagorda bay right there!” I asked Hollis if he ever had his boat drift away from him while wade fishing? “I left my anchor untied one time and while wade fishing I looked back and see my boat gone. It was probly the worst time I’ve ever had and it was dark and thank goodness that a craber was going back home at the time and he was nice enough to stop and pick me up and go lookin for boat boat.” www.capthollisforrester.com

028 JGF, Blackfish in the Long Island Sound

Blackfish in the Long Island Sound, JGF Tales and Reports Podcast Episode 028

Long Island Sound
1st week of October Patti & I went to Bronx New York to visit kids and grand kids. During our stay we enjoyed a week of outdoors which included camping and hiking the Catskills mountains, world class zoo, picking apples at an apple orchard and a day of fishin on the Long Island Sound. Captain Rich Tenreiro guided 3 fourth year med students (including my son in law) of Einstein University and myself on a fantastic day of blackfish fishing the Long Island Sound.

These blackfish are bottom fish creatures that can be very illusive and difficult to catch. They like to hang around structures and reefs and when hooked will try and take your line into the rocks to break off. Capt Rich and first mate Natalie Roseberry worked very hard to put us on the meat. Winds and tidel currents were strong in the morning and made it difficult to anchor in very specific locations in the LI Sound.  Using a 2 anchor technique they were able to hold the boat in such away to maximize our ablilities to hook some nice blackfish for the dinner table that night. www.rgfishing.com

Captain Rich also hosts a TV Show the Northeast Angler where he gives great angling tips for fishing the Northeast. We had a great time with Captain Rich and appreciate his time and efforts in making a memorable experience for us all!

026 JGF, On The Fly Saltwater Fishing

On The Fly Fishing, JGF Tales and Reports Podcast Episode 026

This week we have a unique opportunity to ”go on the fly” with Captain Sally Ann Black on Saltwater Fly Fishing here along the Texas Coastal Bend. Fly fishing is a sport that has really taken off in the last few years since kayaking became more popular. Sally shares, “Not only do I know about Rockport, but I also have learned a lot about the upper Laguna Madre and Baffin Bay which is totally different than any place else on the Texas Coast. It’s like the last best place.” www.captainsally.com

Capt Sally On The Fly Fishing

Capt Sally On The Fly Saltwater Fishing

Capt Sally on the Fly Saltwater Fishing

“The differnece between bait fishing, lure fishing, and fly fishing is that bait fishing you anchor up your boat and bait up a hole and then wait for the fish to come to you. In shallow water fishing or lure fishing and fly site casting you go to the fish! Your presenting food to the fish.” Captain Sally Ann Black

We certainly appeciate Captain Sally for joining us this week on the fly!
